Parallels abound
Today, the parallels between mercury and chemicals known as PFAS are starting to become all too apparent.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of over 15,000 synthetic chemicals that have been widely used since the 1940s. They crop up in various industrial and everyday consumer products including shrink wrap, frying pans, hiking gear or even makeup due to their useful properties, such as being resistant to water, oil and heat.
PFAS are known as "forever chemicals" because they break down very slowly. They persist in the environment and can accumulate in the human body over time.
