A 9-1-1 call was made indicating there was a hostage situation on campus. Students took to social media. Rumors spread causing campus unrest. Law enforcement responded and placed the campus on lockdown. After thorough investigation, law enforcement determined it was a false alarm, no shots fired. The circumstances that led to the belief there was a hostage situation arose when an employee overheard a student say that another student was holding a student at gunpoint. He notified campus police which called in back up. Students overheard the police scanner and that lead to immediate taking to social media and panic. It fortunately was a great misunderstanding, but one that afforded many learnings about the response process.
