Interactive installation the ‘Teeter-Totter Wall’ designed by architects Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello with Colectivo Chopeke has been named by the Design Museum as overall winner of Beazley Designs of the Year 2020.
The temporary installation enabled children on both sides of the US-Mexico border to play together on three bright pink see-saws slotted into gaps in the steel boundary wall by the designers. This took place on 28 July 2019, with footage of the event being shared virally on social media and receiving widespread coverage in mainstream media. Architecture studio Rael San Fratello aimed to demonstrate that actions taking place on one side of the border have direct consequences on the other.
