When consumer financial information is lost, stolen or otherwise breached, the laws of proactive jurisdictions require consumer notification. The goal of such laws is generally to alert consumers that their information may be at risk and to consider taking actions to protect themselves from identity theft. The most notable feature of some of these laws is that they are based on the residence of the consumer, and not the location of the business. This means that a business located in one country  may be legally obligated to meet the specific notification requirements of the laws in each of their customers' home countries and/or states
